Introduction
Max Battles are one of the most exciting features in Pokémon GO — and if you haven't tried them yet, you're in for a treat! These large-scale battles let you team up with up to three other Trainers to Take Down
a powerful Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon together. Think of them as the big, flashy cousin of regular Raid Battles, with a whole new layer of strategy baked in.
Whether you're brand new to Max Battles or looking to level up your approach, this guide covers everything you need to know to walk away with a win.
What Are Max Battles?
Max Battles are cooperative battles where up to 4 Trainers face off against a giant Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon at a Power Spot. Each Trainer brings a team of 3 Max Pokémon. Your goal is to work together to fill a shared Max Meter, which powers up your Pokémon and lets them Dynamax temporarily becoming massive and using devastating Max Moves.
Unlike regular Raids, communication and role coordination are key. Everyone on your team needs to pull their weight!
Understanding the Three Roles
Every successful Max Battle team needs three types of Pokémon working together:
Defenders (also called Chargers) These are your frontline fighters. They stay on the battlefield outside the Max Phase and do one very important job: Charge
the Max Meter by using Fast Moves repeatedly. The best Defenders have high HP and Defense stats, are resistant to the boss Pokémon's moves, and — most importantly — have a 0.5-second Fast Move. That fast attack speed is what fills the Max Meter quickly. Level up their Max Guard
move to help Protect
the team.
Healers Healers come into play during the Max Phase. They restore HP for the whole team using their Max Spirit move. Look for Pokémon with very high HP stats for this role. Their Fast and Charged Moves don't matter here they exist purely to keep everyone alive.
Attackers Attackers are your heavy hitters. They're brought in during the Max Phase to unleash Max Moves and deal massive damage to the boss. You want Pokémon with a high Attack stat, a strong Max Move, and ideally a type advantage over the boss. Gigantamax Pokémon are always the top pick here when available.

How a Max Battle Actually Plays Out
Here's the simple battle loop to keep in mind:
- Start with your Defender. Only use Fast Moves — never Charged Moves during this phase. Charged Moves are slow and barely add damage compared to how much they slow down your Max Meter charging. Spam that Fast Move!
- Dodge incoming attacks. When you see three white lines appear above your Pokémon's head, the boss is targeting you. A quick swipe left or right will reduce the damage no special timing needed, just react when you see the warning.
- Fill the Max Meter. Keep attacking until the meter is charged. This is a team effort, so everyone should be doing the same.
- Enter the Max Phase. Once the meter is full, swap to your Attacker and unleash your Max Move. If a teammate is running low on HP, this is also the time for your Healer to use Max Spirit.
- Repeat until the boss goes down!
Team Composition Tips
For a group of 4 Trainers, a great split is:
- 2 Trainers focused on Attackers
- 1 Trainer running a Defender/Charger team
- 1 Trainer running a Healer (Blissey-focused)
If you're playing with fewer people or going solo, try to cover all three roles within your own team of 3 Pokémon. Prioritize your Charger Pokémon first getting to the Max Phase quickly is the most important thing.
How to Get and Manage Max Particles
Max Particles (MP) are the currency you need to enter Max Battles and upgrade your Max Moves. Here's how to earn them:
- Visit Power Spots — each visit gives you 100 MP (plus a possible bonus tap for 20 more)
- Walk 2 km — earns 300 MP (works with Adventure Sync, so it counts even when the app is closed)
A few things to keep in mind:
- The daily MP collection cap is 800 MP, resetting at 5:00 AM local time
- Your bag can only hold a maximum of 1,500 MP at once
- Max Battles cost 250–800 MP to enter, and MP is only charged if you win
- Don't let your bag fill up before a big event — spend spare MP on Max Move upgrades to stay under the cap
Max Move Upgrade Priority
Before you start powering up Attacker Max Moves, focus on these first:
- Max Guard (on your Defender) — helps protect the team during the regular battle phase
- Max Spirit (on your Healer) — keeps the team alive and lets you survive tougher fights
- Max Attack (on your Attacker) — already available by default, but upgrade it as your resources allow
Attackers already come with their Max Move available from the start, so your Defender and Healer investments pay off faster.
Quick Tips to Remember
- Always use only Fast Moves with your Defender — Charged Moves slow you down
- Blissey is the best Healer in the game; build one if you can
- Gigantamax Pokémon are always better than their Dynamax versions as Attackers
- Match your type advantage to the boss — check the boss's weaknesses before you battle
- Don't let your Max Particle bag fill up! Spend excess MP on upgrades
- Coordinate roles with your team before the battle starts — it makes a big difference
Final Thoughts
Max Battles are a blast, especially when you go in with a solid plan and a good team. The key is understanding your role, picking the right Pokémon, and working together to get to that Max Phase as fast as possible. With a great Defender charging things up, a Blissey keeping everyone healthy, and a powerful Gigantamax Attacker ready to deal the finishing blow — you'll be taking down even the toughest Max Battle bosses before you know it.
Happy battling, Trainers! 🎉
